The Self Care Routine No One Talks About

Working out

Facials

Meditation

Massage

Mindfulness

The list goes on and on if we’re talking about self-care.

When it comes to self care there are multiple avenues you can turn down…or up…or sideways. There is no doubt that the idea of self care has really exploded over the last few years. It’s estimated that the self care industry is worth a whopping 450 billion dollars….that’s billion with a B! There are a lot of different facets when it comes to self care and it can get really cloudy if you’re trying to see what fits into the category. Almost everything can be linked to self care.

In my opinion there are really only 2 main categories when it comes to self care….physical and mental/emotional. What’s important to mention is that one is not more important than the other and both are very much needed. In fact, I would argue that even though they are separate they can impact each other tremendously. There is no doubt that the sleep you get helps rest your physical body, and in turn helps calm your mental or emotional state. Focusing on deep breathing no doubt helps calm the mind, but it also helps slow everything down in the body, which is key as a lot of people have an internal feeling of go go go all the time.

The problem arises when you have a great self care routine that you’ve been sticking to but you’re noticing that you’re still not feeling the best. You still have headaches despite the focus on your diet, supplements, essential oils, etc. Your anxiety is still ramping up even though you’re doing all the things the instagram influencer does to help their stress and anxiety.

What gives?

This gets you to the point of really questioning all of the “self care guru’s” out there. Suddenly you start to get the feeling of frustration and maybe wonder if anything is actually going to help. This is also the point where people then go to the opposite extreme and start down the road of medications and potential surgeries.

I’m here to tell you that there is a different option when it comes to self care. It is a tad more invasive than the diy things most people try but at the same time it is still all natural. This thing I’m talking about is something that most people only think of when they’re in pain, and don’t really view it as a self care thing. I think people don’t view it as a part of self care because it’s something that you can’t really do by yourself.

What I’m talking about is making sure that your nervous system is working correctly! A lot of people don’t think about this because it’s somewhat invisible. You can’t see your nervous system so people don’t even think about making sure it’s healthy. There are devices out there like whoop bands and oura rings that do have a nervous system function regarding heart rate variability, but if that is off how are you supposed to fix it? These devices will monitor your sleep and deep breathing to help your nervous system and body to recover from day to day routines but if there is some sort of interference going on with your nervous system you may need some outside help.

This is where what we do at The Specific Chiropractic Centers comes into play. We help make sure that the nervous system is healthy and working how it’s supposed to.

But what if you don’t have a fancy fitness tracker to see if you’re recovering correctly? How do you figure out if your nervous system is out of whack?

Just like before, when you suddenly realize that your normal self care routines aren’t working how you think they should be…that might be an indicator that something else is going on. And maybe you’re the type of person that doesn’t want to go to the medical doctor but wants to look at alternative routes beforehand. Specific Chiropractic care is the perfect bridge between diy self care and needing something further done that isn’t medical. There isn’t anything injected or put into the body, rather we look at how the body is working and determine if what we do can make it work a little bit better than it already is.

A lot of people only think of Chiropractic as a pain relief type of service but actually we work with a lot of people struggling with headaches, anxiety and chronic stress, ADD/ADHD, and many other things that aren’t necessarily pain related. We’re able to help out these symptoms and conditions because the nervous system will be at the foundation of why people are experiencing them. The body will be stuck in a chronic state of fight or flight which is controlled by the nervous system. So what we do is measure the nervous system to discover if this is a problem or not. Oftentimes we’ll see that there is a problem with the nervous system causing people to experience these issues. We address this and perform a very specific adjustment to allow the nervous system to work properly again. This in turn helps symptoms dissipate without the need for medication or surgery.

If you’re someone who really likes focusing on self care and knows that it’s important to maintain healthy habits but find that you’re still struggling with certain symptoms then maybe specific chiropractic care is what you need. I know how frustrating it can be when your normal self care routines aren’t producing the same results they once did but I can tell you that there is something you can do to help them be more effective again. I believe it all comes down to your nervous system and making sure that vital part of your body is healthy and working correctly!
