The #1 Reason People Don’t Get Better

Recently I started golfing again.

I say again as I used to be on the golf team when I was in high school.

The golf team made me kind of hate golf as it took the fun out of it, I didn’t like how competitive it ended up getting.

So this year when my girlfriend told me that she wanted to start golfing I figured it would be a good opportunity to get back into it.

I dusted off and cleaned my clubs, got some new grips, bought a pair of golf shoes….I was ready to go!

Welllll, the problem with golf is that it’s really hard!

I went to the driving range and got my swing back slowly but surely, then the time came to actually play a round of 9 holes. I surprised myself and actually shot really well. My score was pretty much the same as it had been years ago when I stopped playing. I was impressed to say the least.

Then I decided to play again and I ended up playing much worse than the first time. Almost as if the first round was a fluke. So I ended up going to the driving range again and continuing to practice and play. I’m pretty much at the point where I was when I gave up golf again and I’m okay with that, I wasn’t bad by any means and it’s a solid foundation.

With where I’m at I know that I need to play and practice more, and with time I’ll end up getting better. I may have rounds where I do worse from time to time but that’s okay.

Why the heck am I talking about golf?

Well when it comes to life and the choices we make it can be pretty similar to golf, especially when we are talking about our health. There are hundreds of choices we can make when it comes to being healthier or not. The problem is that how our society is now a days everyone expects there to be a get well quick scheme to it all!

Start this workout and get 6 pack abs in 15 days.

Drink this shake and lose 50 pounds in the first month.

Use this skin cream and get rid of wrinkles.

The list goes on and on, and what’s crazy is that everyone believes what they are being told by these massive companies. Now sure, some of the claims are somewhat true for a very small percentage of the population. What we normally see is that the people these claims are true for, are people that are already super committed to their health or aren’t afraid to fully commit to changing their lifestyle.

This is what’s tricky and deceiving for everyone. If we look at working out, you could workout for a week, be super sore, and not see any visible changes in your body. It often takes months to see any change with your body when we’re talking about exercise. The exact same can be said about the care we offer at The Specific Chiropractic Centers.

Majority of the time people come in with symptoms they’ve had for years and years. The next part is where things get interesting. If someone has been experiencing symptoms for years, they’ve had an underlying problem for even longer!

The nervous system controls everything in the body, along with feeling things, like symptoms. The nerves that control feeling only make up about 10% of the total nerves in the body. Which means there’s been something going on with the other parts of the nervous system for a much longer time prior to us feeling anything. Similar to exercise, it takes a long time for there to be a change in the body, either good or bad!

So if we’ve had this thing going on in our body for years and years, there’s no way it would go away in only a couple of months. It’s going to take months and months for this issue to be fixed, and that’s on the fast track! Some people understand this at first but when it comes down to it, if they don’t experience a change in how they feel within the first month they don’t think what we’re doing is working. Remember what we said about the nerves that have to deal with feeling only make up about 10% of all the nerves in your body?

So if those nerves make up such a small amount, and the others are in charge of function throughout the body, then it’s going to take a while for us to feel an actual change in what’s going on. This is one of the main reasons why I believe people don’t get better.

I’m not downplaying the severity of symptoms or anything like that, but when someone has severe symptoms and only puts half effort, or completes half of a recommended plan regarding their health, there is no way that they are ever going to get better.

Similar to golf, if I were to not practice and just not go golfing, then randomly start back up and except to be amazing over multiple rounds, that would be ridiculous. Consistent playing and practice is key if you want to get good at any sport, not just golf. If you don’t you’ll always be hitting a ceiling. Just like sports, the same goes for your health. If you plan on just dabbling in things here and there your results are going to be subpar. Going all in is something that is a must when it comes to your health, especially if you want to achieve maximum results. At The Specific Chiropractic Centers we focus on the importance of the nervous system and how it coordinates all the actions inside of the body. If you believe that your nervous system isn’t working at 100% then feel free to reach out to us and set up a complimentary consultation where we can see what’s going on and if we can help you out!
