Can Eating Healthy Foods be Detrimental?

You’re making the switch!

Finally focusing on things that are going to make you a healthy person. You’ll be able to enjoy life more, not feel so crappy about yourself, lose some weight, try avoiding certain diseases, and potentially live a lot longer.

All of these are amazing benefits that people can experience once they start focusing on what they eat and make better choices. This is also really hard to do, especially if you live with someone who doesn’t care too much about what they eat. It can also be difficult because some of your favorite foods may not make that healthy food list.

But for real, you wake up and decide to skip your morning breakfast bar as you decided you’re going to start your day with a smoothie instead. It’s delicious, you’re proud of yourself for making something that’s healthy and actually tastes good, all is well! Lunch rolls up and instead of going to your favorite fast food place you packed a lunch, you’re killing it! You head home from work and make a fantastic dinner, a great assortment of protein and vegetables, things are looking up for sure!

You decide to switch it up and have some eggs in the morning instead of your smoothie, still a healthy choice! You get to work and notice you feel a little more lethargic than normal, might feel a little puffy, and even notice some phlegm in the back of your throat. You think to yourself that you’re coming down with something. As the day goes on you start to feel back to your normal self. You have eggs again the following day and notice you feel the same way…weird!! Most people wouldn’t put 2 and 2 together, especially with eggs being relatively good for you.

Something that barely anyone ever thinks about is what foods might actually bother them. We all know someone who has a food allergy. Food allergies can really differ as well, some people are deathly allergic while others might just get some canker sores on the inside of their mouth. Being allergic to a certain food is pretty obvious but what if you’re not allergic to any foods, are you still able to eat whatever you want?

This is what I was somewhat describing regarding the eggs. You aren’t really allergic to them or have any sort of severe reaction but they do cause some sort of reaction in your body. This is your body’s way of telling you that eggs aren’t necessarily the best thing for you. Sure they can be really healthy for other people but that might not be the case for you. The most challenging part out of all of this is it’s almost impossible to figure out what works for you on your own. You usually have to do some type of testing, some are as readily available as 23 and me.

What can this actually cause though?

So what if you feel a little run down after eating a certain type of food, deal with it for a few hours and get on with your day, right? Well that can be detrimental in the long run. If we continue to do this and keep avoiding it, we can start to have chronic problems. One of the main problems I see in people is inflammation. By continued eating of things the internal system has to keep fighting these toxins which leads to chronic inflammation. This chronic inflammation then puts your body into a state of survival mode. This survival mode can feel like a twinge of anxiety always being there. This can lead to other things going on in the body like cognitive issues, behavioral issues, and physical issues….all from something you ate!

There are a variety of foods that a lot of people are sensitive to with the most common being gluten, dairy, eggs, and processed sugars. These can all lead to an imbalance of the bacteria in your stomach. Suddenly we are absorbing things we shouldn’t be causing the body to constantly fight them off, sending us into this survival mode. There are a few ways to combat all of this. The first being getting tested for any sort of food sensitivities you might have which we mentioned earlier. Otherwise you can look up diets for leaky gut syndrome online and follow a strict diet that helps all of that. You may be doing all of these things and focusing on fixing your diet and health but still have this feeling that you aren’t at your best yet.

What might be the thing that you’re missing? Well first thing is first…get some food sensitivity testing done but also get your nervous system checked out! The nervous system not only controls pain and discomfort but it also controls our digestive tract. If our nervous system isn’t working correctly then it may cause our digestion system to not function properly as well. This system is also the reason why we may always feel like we’re in the survival mode we talked about earlier. At The Specific Chiropractic Center we focus on the nervous system and making sure that it’s always working at 100%. This can help heal the gut and leaky gut syndrome, but also help some of the sensitivities we may experience.

There are multiple facets to health and I hope this article allows you to understand that. Food plays a huge role in our health and if we aren’t eating the right foods for our bodies it can throw it into an inflammatory state. That inflammatory state can cause the nervous system to chronically be stuck in survival mode. This will cause us to potentially have long term health issues that we may never find true relief for until we address our diet and along with our nervous system. If this is something that you deal with don’t hesitate to reach out to us, we would love to help you out and help you live the life you deserve to live.
